Coming from a working-class background, she experienced a “social fracture” at school that shaped her identity and her writing. For Ernaux, writing is a way to transform shame into strength and to turn intimate experience into universal material. Her works blur the boundaries between genres: they are neither traditional autobiography nor pure autofiction, but stand at the crossroads of literature, sociology, and history. By adopting a deliberately “flat” style, stripped of aesthetic embellishments, Ernaux exposes the social structures and inequalities embedded in everyday life. This stylistic choice reflects her ambition to write from a collective position rather than a purely individual one, and to highlight voices often silenced by dominant culture. Her narratives, rooted in personal memory, constantly resonate with collective history, making her texts both deeply subjective and socially meaningful. In this way, Ernaux’s work goes beyond autobiography: it becomes a political and literary act of resistance, a means of reclaiming dignity, and a powerful space for emancipation.
The following essay discusses emancipation and rebellion in Cameroonian noir, through an analysis of Mongo Beti’s last two works. A sub-genre of crime fiction launched in France during World War II by Léo Malet, noir espouses a political agenda and a strong desire for literary and cultural emancipation that constitute its trademark. Other literary figures such as Chester Himes will maintain this political orientation through the denunciation of racial discrimination. In his two last novels, we argue that Mongo Beti relies on noir to further his consistent denunciation of corruption and violence in postcolonial Cameroon. In addition, the novelist embraces a literary style that, through ridicule and realism, restores human dignity.

Jean-Hugues Bita’a Menye Prawa autorskie (c) 2025 https://czasopisma.uni.opole.pl/index.php/l/article/view/6262 Thu, 25 Jun 2026 00:00:00 +0000 Artaud et le statut du spectateur : quel genre d’émancipation ? https://czasopisma.uni.opole.pl/index.php/l/article/view/6263
Based on a few remarks and distinctions made by Jacques Rancière, this article aims to examine a tension running through Artaud’s theatrical thinking. We will attempt to show how Artaud sought to conceive of the emancipation of the spectator, which was a leitmotif in all his writings on theatre, using concepts that presupposed nothing less than the submission or subjugation of the spectator. Some implications and limitations of this tension will then be examined in light of what Artaud teaches us about his play Les Cenci.

Simon De Gavre Prawa autorskie (c) 2025 https://czasopisma.uni.opole.pl/index.php/l/article/view/6263 Thu, 25 Jun 2026 00:00:00 +0000 En guerre de François Bégaudeau (2018) : un roman d’émancipation https://czasopisma.uni.opole.pl/index.php/l/article/view/6264
This article examines En guerre (2018) by François Bégaudeau through the lens of the concept of emancipation. It argues that the novel contains three complementary modalities of emancipation. First, from a Bourdieusian perspective, it promotes an emancipation of readers through social critique, which exposes the mechanisms of class domination. Second, in a more symbolic register, the novel stages an emancipation of the popular classes, whose vitality is foregrounded and valorized. Finally, an aesthetic form of emancipation operates through the use of free indirect discourse, which democratizes the diegesis by giving voice to dominated subjects and by unsettling the hierarchies structuring the social order.

This article examines the literary evolution of Louisiana from 1810 to the late 19th century, highlighting the complex cultural ties between Louisiana and France. It focuses on the generation of poets born around 1810 (Dominique and Adrien Rouquette, Armand Lanusse, Alexandre Latil, and others) whose works were deeply influenced by French Romanticism yet constrained by the peripheral, mercantile, and largely francophone context of Louisiana. Through close readings of selected works, including Les Meschacébéennes, Les Savanes, Les Éphémères, and later texts by Mercier and Rillieux, the study reveals a persistent tension : authors sought recognition in France while remaining rooted in local landscapes, histories and languages. The analysis shows that Louisiana literature often remained insular and imitative, struggling to achieve universality (or stylistic innovation), despite sporadic originality. This peripheral literature provides a nuanced view of identity, exile – and the challenges of literary creation outside metropolitan centers.
The author identifies the theme of emancipation as one of the main vectors of a dome of lies that encloses our contemporary societies. He supports his argument with female emancipation which, contrary to the dominant dogma, seems to him already realized (at least in the West) and not yet to come… Then he demonstrates that this notion is soon linked to others with similar functions: the „Taboo,” also abundant in the defense of the supposedly forgotten or „invisibilized” Feminine, is a tool serving a desire to infantilize individuals in a triumphant consumer society far beyond the West (see Putin’s Russia!). He employs empirical reflection such as the analysis of a women’s magazine and cross-references with intellectuals like Derrida, Roudinesco, Badiou, and Cioran.
Despite the constraints of the era, in 1899 Georges Eekhoud published the first French-language literary work to center the homosexual love between two men: “Escal-Vigor”. The unconventional use of religious symbolism and the synthesis of mythological and Christian motifs enable an unconventional portrayal of non-heteronormativity. The article demonstrates how religious symbols can be used to glorify the love between two men. The use of methods from literary studies and anthropology enables an in-depth analysis of saintly figures who contrast with the Roman and Greek myths that underlie many of the novel’s themes. Comparing the protagonists of the novel “Escal-Vigor” with the lives of such figures and with the heroes of Greek and Roman allows us to understand the use of religious syncretism in the queer perspective and to present the image of homosexual love created by Eekhoud.
Paulina Strumińska Prawa autorskie (c) 2025 https://czasopisma.uni.opole.pl/index.php/l/article/view/6267 Thu, 25 Jun 2026 00:00:00 +0000 Witold Wołowski, Konrad et Godot, un dialogue des symboles...
