Abstract

The collection and publication of children’s rhymes from the German minority are experiencing
a renaissance in Hungary. However, the question arises as to what extent they can still be considered a living
part of children’s culture, since very few children in this country speak German, let alone a German dialect
(Klein 2007: 19). For this reason, the present study focuses on the question of how many and which rhymes
the parents of kindergarten children in Hungary know, how many and which of them they pass on to their
children, and in which language variety. The research was carried out using questionnaires given to the parents
of kindergarten children. The responses were evaluated and the results presented in tables. To illustrate this
process clearly, the rhymes were grouped. Based on the results obtained, the authors wish to advocate for the
support of the use of dialects in institutions of the Hungarian German minority, as well as for an engagement
with the local cultural and educational contexts in this regard.
