Abstract

Current issues and challenges in European German studies as reflected in the thematic frameworks of German studies conferences (2016–2026)

European German studies are undergoing a period of visible transformation. This article examines academic conferences on German studies held over the past ten years and analyses key institutional, thematic and methodological priorities within German studies research in Europe. The aim of the study is to identify key developments in European German studies over the last decade based on a qualitative content analysis of conference titles, conference programs, calls for papers, section titles and panel descriptions. Conference culture is understood as a kind of mirror of academic developments, revealing which topics, methods and perspectives within the discipline deserve special attention and which challenges are emerging for its future development.
