Spiš German identity in the year of the political upheavals of 1918 as reflected in the Karpathen-Post

Abstract

The article deals with the re-construction of the ethnic identity of the German enclave in the last
months of 1918 in the Spiš region, on the periphery of the old Hungary and the new Czechoslovak Republic.
Based on the analysis of a text corpus on the researched topic from the local German-language weekly newspaper
Karpathen-Post and the analysis of the socio-political context, the identity change of the Spiš Germans
is traced and its politically induced ruptures are shown.
