Abstract

The Wymysorys language developed from the language variety of the settlers of Germanic descent
who founded the small town of Wymysoü/Wilamowice in the 13th century. Thanks to the bottom-up language
revitalization since 2010, it is still spoken today by around 10 native speakers and several dozen of young
new speakers. A successful revitalisation is only possible if the users of the language have positive attitudes towards it. The main goal of this paper is the analysis of statements of Wymysorys language native speakers,
which were collected during a long-term field research, before the grassroots activities of the Vilamovians
were supported by academics and external activists. The text attempts to explain the success of the revitalisation
of Wymysorys language.
