The position of the German language in the Czech Republic

Abstract

The article describes the position of the German language in the education system of the Czech Republic. First, an overview of the general school system is given, with the focus being on foreign language teaching. Another focus is on the role of German as a cultural and minority language in the Czech Republic. The history and development of this language community, as well as the current challenges and opportunities, are briefly described. The perception of the German language and culture by Czech pupils and students and the motivation to learn German are also presented.
