Grammaticalization at the boundary: „sein + klar“ in transition
The study examines the word combination Subject + sein + klar from a grammaticalization-theoretical perspective. Based on a qualitative corpus analysis, it investigates the extent to which klar in predicative position exhibits early tendencies of grammaticalization. Considered are semantic bleaching, structural fixation, and functional specialization. The results reveal, in addition to lexical uses, metaphorical, elliptical, and phraseological usages. Overall, the construction can be described as a borderline case: it does not yet constitute a grammatical marker but is structurally receptive to further construction-driven developments.
