The article offers insight into the historical anchorage of the German language in Siebenbürgen (Transylvania) and outlines thereby also the transformation of a community and the current situation of the German language in Romania and its speakers. Historical and current variants of the German language in Transylvania are interwoven presentations of several traditional research fields of the Romanian German philology, which took it upon itself to attend to the fostering of the German language, literature and culture, and thereby to try maintain a weighty legacy.
