Although taboo and tabooing are not new concepts in the humanities, including literary studies, their interpretative potential has not yet been fully exploited. This article begins with an attempt to define the title phenomena, then showing (on selected examples) their presence in texts that are the subject of German studies. The description covers “canonical” texts – often present on school reading lists – as well as more or less clearly stigmatized publications, explored and analyzed by a relatively small group of recipients.
