Snatched from the clutches of oblivion. The resource of the State Archive in Opole as a research source for Germanists

Małgorzata Blach-Margos

Abstract

According to Aleida Assmann, there is an intermediate stage between the antonyms ‚remembering‘ and ‚forgetting‘, which the author describes as ‚Verwahrensvergessen‘ and equates it with entering archive. Documents, which are kept in the state archives, are intended to provide answers to future questions or to shed new light on the past. In the State Archive in Opole we can find about five kilometers of files in German. The aim of this article is to encourage scientists, especially Germanists, to visit archives and research the sources.
