Abstract

German studies in Central Europe face significant challenges that have emerged in the new millennium, including a declining interest in German and a falling level of German language proficiency among university applicants. It is pointed out that the lack of a clear approach to language teaching and misguided language policies, as well as the declining interest in learning German as a second foreign language, are significant obstacles. Despite these challenges, common goals without borders are seen as an opportunity to
strengthen German studies in Central Europe and maintain the importance of German in the labour market.
