Abstract

This article will first discuss the special characteristics, challenges and functions of museum texts, including addressee-orientation, readability, multimodality, spatial limitations and intercultural sensitivity. Subsequently, reference is made to the translation-relevant specifics of this group of texts and to selected principles of translation studies that are applied in the museum context. In particular, the problems of equivalence, the skopos theory as well as aspects of cultural transfer and translating culture should be mentioned. In the empirical part, the considerations made at the beginning are illustrated and confronted with a practical example. This is a translation project of the Opole German Department for the Museum of Opole Silesia.
