Abstract

In this article, the author takes a closer look at the origins of printing and the development of the press in Europe and the German states. She emphasizes the role of writing and its development as one of the more significant inventions of mankind, and looks at the invention of paper and movable type by Johannes Gutenberg, which allowed for an unprecedented spread of the press in this space. It traces the development of the press as a means of conveying first basic, over time multi-topic and comprehensive news, gaining in popularity and demand especially during periods of wartime turmoil and other landmark historical events in Europe.
