Abstract

Frequency Profile of Vocabulary in Selected Textbooks for German at the A1 Level

The article examines course and workbook materials for teaching German at the A1 level with regard to vocabulary scope. The aim was to determine whether the textbooks already contain an excessively large vocabulary at the A1 level. Fourteen textbook series for primary schools, grammar schools, and secondary schools were analyzed. Significant differences were found in vocabulary scope and vocabulary work (e.g., productive vs. receptive vocabulary, vocabulary per lesson, glossary structure). The results are intended to help teachers avoid overwhelming students and to support their motivation in learning German.
