CONCEPTIONS OF SPATIAL AND FUNCTIONAL REDEYELOPMENT OF HISTORICAL WORKERS’ ESTATES IN LODŹ

Abstract

Lodź -the city often called ‘Polish Manchester’ -is striving towards exploiting in the adeąuate degree its post-industrial architectural heritage - asthe element building citys attractiveness and competitiveness due to the unique cultural tourism resources. Lodź authorities prepared in 2007 TheRegeneration Program of Historical Workers'Estates, regarding three localizations - Księży Młyn, Plac Zwycięstwa and Ogrodowa. The model ofregeneration proposed in the Program is one based on the public-private partnership. Due to the high cultural value ofhistorical workers’ estates, their role and place in spatial and functional structure of city, difficult social situation of many inhabitants, bad technical State of buildings and surroundings, the issue of their regeneration is very complex. City authorities, being conscious ofthis fact, has prepared a set ofreports and analyses, considering economic and legał aspects ofthe Program, as well as - presented here - proposals of their functional and spatial organization. AU these documents are intended to be an instrument for local
authorities to control the finał effects ofregeneration program conceived as public - private partnership.
