SEMI-URBANISATION AND SUBURBANISATION. EVOLUTION OF PROCESSES IN THE OPOLE AGGLOMERATION

Abstract

The discussion on characteristic features of urbanisation process in rural surroundings of Opole which were started quite early in the beginning of XIX Century is provided. Process of urbanisation was closely connected to industrialisation of rural areas there and should be summarized as semi-urbanisation. Hus process was parallel to suburbanisation and many areas were effected by both of them. Discussion on research and scientific roots of the term semi-urbanisation in economic and social geography, regional and rural policy as well as in local studies is given. Special attention have been paid to genesis of urbanisation process in rural areas of Opole Silesia and its evolution till the period of economic transformation in Poland. Spatial diffusion of suburbanisation and semi-urbanisation processes in the region is analysed also. The paper try to define as much the term semi-urbanisation fit to the very characteristic features and advances of urbanisation phenomenon in Opole Agglomeration during the
period oftransition in Poland.
