Planning forcompactcity: case study of urban design competition for masterplan for Giżynek in Stargard Szczeciński

Abstract

The issue of shaping the compact city in Poland has been presented in the article. Urban design competitions may be a tool for finding a proper solution for a urban site, area or plot. Case study of urban competition for ideas for 100 ha site Stargard Szczeciński (from 2014) has been discussed. The competition for Giżynek quarter has been called in 2014 and over 25 entries have been submitted, prizes have been awarded. Author proposes original research method to compare different masterplans. The research method has been introduced and tested on several competition entries to verify possible future solutions and its consequences. Questions have been rised whether actual trends in urban planning in Poland follow the theoretical basics for shaping of the truly compact cities.
