Disintegration of urban space in Łódź in the light of social survey

Iwona Pielesiak

Abstract

Contemporary big cities are affected by progressing disintegration of their space. In this paper an attempt was made to analyse the perception of the scale and scope of this process on the basis of a survey with urban space users in Łódź. The interviewees indicated hardly accessible places, as well as barriers that discouraged them from moving around certain areas of the city, adding justifications to their opinions. The analyses were also supposed to reveal whether, according to public opinion, in Łódź there are places of limited accessibility which ought to be allowed for public use. The results indicate a key role of transportation and adjoining infrastructure for both processes – integration and fragmentation of urban space. Furthermore, they suggest that the perception of urban space cohesion relies visibly on the subjective sense of security within the city.
