Abstract

The increased social activity of Poland's inhabitants, manifested among others by membership in associations, stems from their conviction that they have real opportunities to improve the standard and quality of life in their place of residence. Previous research suggests that the level of this activity varies spatially, depending on the size of settlement units and the socio-economic polarisation of the country (Frykowski and Jażdżewska, 2009; Józefowicz and Michniewicz-Ankiersztajn, 2020). It also appears that demographic characteristics and social structure may play a role in the level of involvement in local community activities. The purpose of this study is an attempt to determine the factors that determine social participation of small town residents. The analysis was made at the level of urban and urban-rural communes (where the population of towns does not exceed 20,000). The principal component method was used to achieve the desired goal. A set of demographic and socio-economic characteristics available in the LDB and data on associations registered in the National Court Register were used.
