Development problems of post-mining cities – Wałbrzych case study

Abstract

Most of post-mining cities after closure of mines have to deal with serious problems. Implementation of instruments aiming at elimination of negative results of mining industry liquidation in social, economic and spatial management sphere seems necessary. Defining a development strategy is the key issue. In this context analysis of alternative long term development path is very important. The aim of this paper was to analyse potentials as well as barriers for Walbrzych development. Special focus was put on features resulting from mining heritage of the city, as use of natural and cultural potentials could create significant development factor for post-mining areas. The study aimed also to identify and analyse strategic options (based on TOWS matrix methodology) in particular fields important from the point of view of Walbrzych development.
