Abstract

The main aim of the study was to examine the level of post-traumatic stress in women and their partners after experiencing natural childbirth in one of its three circumstances. In addition, the aim of the study was also to examine life satisfaction with a focus on partners' sexual satisfaction.
The study was conducted on a group of women and men (N=180) who became parents as a result of a woman giving birth alone, giving birth with a partner or giving birth with a companion other than a partner. The following tools were used in the study: Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Impact of Events Scale IES-R, Sexual Satisfaction Questionnaire.
Statistical analyses were performed using one-way analysis of variance for independent groups and post hoc test with Bonferroni correction or Games-Howell correction. Results confirmed the hypotheses that solitary natural childbirth is a predictor of post-traumatic stress disorder in women and influences their feelings of lower life satisfaction. In men, on the other hand, participation in natural childbirth with a partner significantly affects feelings of lower sexual satisfaction.
The hypothesis of lower life satisfaction in men actively participating in natural childbirth was partially confirmed. The results obtained are discussed with regard to the interferences, limitations and possible future use of the study.
