Abstract

The aim of the paper is to consider the dynamics and complexity of socio-political changes in Turkey analyzed from the longue durée perspective by reference to C. Schmitt’s theory of political theology. Particular attention is paid to the ideas of the state, society, as well as to general conceptualizations of political life and culture, developed during the last phase of the existence of the Ottoman Empire, in the period of the birth of the Republic of Turkey, throughout realization of the project of modernization and in the most recent moment of the religious revival (political Islam). This necessarily brief synthesis allows us to identify the constants crucial to the historical political ontology in Turkey, revealing tensions between secularism, political radicalism and theological (religious) dimension of political authority, power, sovereignty and rights.
