Abstract

The dynamic development of the Internet has changed the concept of information, as well as
the methods of its dissemination. Universal access to social media has shaped a new way of communication
in the modern world. The article addresses the importance of social media in relation to local government
units in Poland and attempts to define them. Modern local government wants to be closer and closer to the
inhabitants, who are no longer just passive recipients of information, but actively participate in virtual life.
The aim of the article is to identify the levels of social media use by 18 capital cities of Polish voivodeships.
The attractiveness of the official Facebook pages of the cities studied was analyzed in terms of their communication with the residents.
