In the Catholic Church, the problem of restoring visible Christian unity, although variously emphasised, has always been topical. This was reflected, for example, in the existence over the centuries of an appropriate dicastery of the Roman Curia, whose fundamental task was to promote dialogue with the Churches and Christian Communities separated from the Holy See. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to discuss, in historical and legal terms, the relevant administrative office assisting the Bishop of Rome in his quest for the unity of all Christians (currently the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity). And although this institution has changed its name over the years with the successive reforms of the Roman Curia by the Popes, it has always tried and continues to try to fulfil its mission in the Church.
