Abstract

Ecumenism was one of the important aspects of the synodal process in the Catholic Church in 2021-2024 (1). The aim of this article is to analyse ecumenical issues contained in the materials of the synodal process in Poland (2) and to evaluate them with conclusions that may be useful for the implementation phase of the Synod, planned for the coming years. Ecumenism should continue to be an important dimension of this stage (3). In general, Polish Catholics are aware that ecumenism is an important challenge for the Church, but they fear that ecumenical activities may lead to a ‘blurring of Catholicism’. In some diocesan syntheses, the topic of ecumenism was not addressed at all or was only mentioned marginally. It even seems that ‘in our experience of the Church, ecumenism basically does not exist.’ The war in Ukraine, however, has brought new ecumenical challenges. There are constant references to the need for catechesis on other denominations and proposals for ecumenical meetings and prayers at the parish level. There are calls for the development of joint charitable, cultural, scientific and evangelisation projects. Christians of other denominations, as well as the faithful of the Catholic Church, were only marginally involved in the synodal process in Poland. An inspiring way to ‘make up’ for the ecumenical – and other – shortcomings of the synodal process in Poland seems to be the proposal to implement the renewed Charta Oecumenica (2025). It is worth making it the subject of reflection in a ‘bottom-up’ process, starting with parish pastoral councils and synodal teams.
