Abstract

The article presents the interpretation of the Pentecostal term “baptism with the Holy Spirit” by Heribert Mühlen, one of the leading pneumatologists of the 20th century and theologians of the Catholic charismatic renewal movement. Mühlen, combining the “baptism of the Holy Spirit” with the sacraments of baptism and confirmation, places a strong emphasis on the experience of Jesus' baptism in the Jordan and on the experience of Pentecost for the Church. In his opinion, every believer can and should draw power for spiritual life from both of these events.

Mühlen introduces the new term “renewal of the spirit” understood as “experience of the spirit” in place of the term “baptism with the Holy Spirit.” “Renewal of the spirit” is an ongoing process, not a one-off, and Pentecostalism is the source of the church's growth.
