Abstract

The year 2023 was an important jubilee related to the 400th anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Josaphat Kuncewicz. This martyr bishop, a monk belonging to the Basilian Order, died in Vitebsk on November 12, 1623. Books and brochures created after the canonization (after 1867) mostly show the historically accurate face of Josaphat Kuncewicz. The main source of information for the Polish reader about St. Josaphat was a book by Father Alfons Guépin from 1885, translated by Father Kalinka. Thanks to it, many other authors, including Father Jan Urban and Tadeusz Żychiewicz (Jozafat Kuncewicz, Kalwaria Zebrzydowska 1986), perpetuated the image of Josaphat Kuncewicz based on historical facts.
