Fr Georg Hertel (1901–1945) – a Pastor, Educator, War Victim

Abstract

Fr Georg Hertel was a German clergyman, born in 1901 in Świdnica. After completing his theological studies at the University of Wrocław, he was ordained a priest, after which he was directed to further studies in Roman philology and then to catechetical work in Wrocław, Świdnica and Brzeg. From 1936, Fr Hertel lived in Opole. There he was engaged in catechetical and pastoral work. He was valued as a dedicated teacher and a gifted preacher. During the
Second World War, in 1942, he was appointed chaplain at St Adalbert’s Hospital, where he was killed three years later by one of the soldiers of the Red Army entering Opole.
