Abstract

Vocation or calling is a popular motif in Catholicism. This article explores its normative meaning, questions its theological foundation and draws attention to problematic theoretical and practical implications. It takes a critical look at the biblical basis and the dualistic implications
of classical theology of vocation. Idealization and the possibility of abuse of power are brought into focus as practical potential problems. Finally, a basis for a responsible theology of vocation is outlined.
