Abstract

The Roman phase is not merely a formal examination of documents, but an act of communal judgement by the Church, which – guided by the Holy Spirit – examines whether holiness was indeed manifested in the candidate’s life as a sign of the working of grace. It is at this stage that the Positio Causae is compiled and assessed by the historical and theological consultors. The published documents, in turn, form the basis for the judgement of the cardinals and bishops, who – if the outcome is positive – present the case to the Holy Father, for he alone can raise the candidate to the glory of the altars.
