Pope Leo XIV’s recent encyclical on the ethics of AI, Magnifica Humanitas, is a timely response to AI’s threat to human dignity and the common good and an essential update to Catholic social teaching in light of that threat. In what follows, the article first explains the various types of human dignity described in Dignitas Infinita, a summary of the Church’s teaching on this concept and one that grounds Pope Leo’s reflections in his encyclical.
