Le respect de l' « Autre » dans les récits de voyage français en Grèce au XIXe siècle

Antigone Samiou

Abstrakt

The representation of Greece in 19th-century French travel literature oscillates between the idealization of classical antiquity and the ethnographical reality of contemporary Greeks. This article examines how French travelers demonstrated—or failed to show—respect for the Greek "Other" (l'Autre) during their journeys. Through an analysis of viatic accounts, personal correspondence, and literary memoirs, we explore the intercultural dialogue and the tensions between bookish reminiscences and lived experiences. While some authors replicate romantic stereotypes and show a certain cultural paternalism, others manage to develop a genuine respect for the modern Greek identity, transforming the journey into a profound spiritual and human encounter.
