As an epic of evil, Les liaisons dangereuses by Choderlos de Laclos has greatly marked human consciences. By allowing his protagonists to express themselves freely, the author has advanced a moral philosophy in which pleasure is a necessity. The vicomte de Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil embody these wonderful beings who only get delighted when they cause suffering to others. In this epistolary novel, pleasure cannot be separated from Evil. Henceforth, Choderlos de Laclos sheds a different light on this libertine philosopher. The perversion, cynicism and sadism that fuel the protagonists’ pleasure naturally offend the morals. The decline they undergo at the end of work illustrates the limits of the libertine game. On the other hand, victims are rehabilitated through redemptive suffering.
