Abstract

The article defines and discusses the principle admirationem fidelium vitare (“to avoid the disturbance of the faithful”), which appears discreetly in Church documents, as a liturgical norm safeguarding the spiritual sensitivity of worship participants. The author argues that astonishment – understood as a negative emotional reaction to liturgical innovations or anomalies – can disrupt the experience of the mystery and weaken the efficacy of grace. This principle is rooted in the predictability and order (ordo) of the liturgy, as well as in the faithful’s intuitive sensus as a criterion of ecclesial discernment. The need for harmony between emotional expression and the sobriety (sobrietas) of the Roman liturgy is also emphasized, making this principle a valuable tool in the proper implementation of liturgical reform.
