Abstract

This article is dedicated to the reception of the Nicene Council in the Armenian liturgy, which developed its own feast commemorating the 318 Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council. The analysis focuses on the texts of hymns from the Liturgy of the Hours as well as the proper Mass formularies. Most of the examined compositions refer in their content to the first three ecumenical councils and are also used during commemorations of the Councils of Constantinople and Ephesus. The main themes of the analyzed liturgical texts include: the praise of the conciliar Fathers and their portrayal as guardians of the faith, the affirmation of the divinity of the Son of God, and the manifestation of Divine Providence in the development of Church doctrine. The thematic content of these texts shows certain similarities to the hymnography of the Byzantine liturgy, which likewise developed a similar feast. Considering the time of composition of the texts in both traditions, it is plausible to assume that the feast of the 318 Fathers entered the Armenian liturgy under the influence of Byzantium.
