Abstract
One of the most important characteristics of the modern world is polycentricity, analyzed in various aspects and in relation to different spatial scales. The literature indicates numerous advantages of such a spatial structure at the scale of the European Union, individual countries, regions, urban agglomerations or creation of polycentric urban networks. However, there are not many papers on the polycentric spatial structure of the city, which, as it seems, can bring many different benefits to the citizens and the city as a whole, while making it possible to achieve the objectives of sustainable development. The paper presents the concept of urban substructures, which is a part of polycentricity of cities, consisting of a subcentre and the area of its influence. The main purpose of the article is to analyze and evaluate whether the Poznań district Jeżyce can be treated as a substructure of Poznań, whose focal point (and also subcenter of the city) is located in the center of the district Jeżycki Market. On the basis of document analysis and field research it was determined, among others: (1) the functions that the Jeżycki Market performs for the residents of Jeżyce and the city as a whole, (2) the places where the residents of the estate satisfy their daily needs, and (3) their relationship to the area they live in (territorial identity). The study concluded that Jeżyce can be described as an urban substructure. The study also indicated the benefits of creating a polycentric spatial form of the city consisting of substructures.
