Electromobility in public transport in small towns in Poland

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to characterise spatial diffusion and development of electric urban transport serving Polish towns with the population between 10,000 and 25,000. We have identified 20 such small towns which have purchased in total 62 electric buses. They are located mostly in south-western and central Poland and interestingly they do not belong to any metropolitan areas. What is even more interesting, in case of seven towns the decision to introduce electric buses has been taken in connection with the opening of the first municipal transport lines. Hence, it would seem that the electromobile innovation can have a positive influence on diffusion of public transport in small towns. On the other hand, higher operating costs associated with operating very small innovative transport systems may involve serious risks in the future.
