Abstract

By Poland gaining independence in 1918 it led to numerous necessary changes under the state and church administration. The Kujawy and Kalisz Diocese, extensive in territory, comprising of Czestochowa in its southern part, required the reform of borders, which was asked for by bishop Stanisław Zdzitowiecki. According to the papal bull Vixdum Poloniae unitas of 28th of October 1925 by Pius XI , the Czestochowa Diocese was established among others. Whereas the bull Commissam Humilitati Nostrae of 14th of December of 1925 appointed its first bishop – Rev. Dr Teodor Kubina from Katowice. The appointed bishop was a pro-Polish activist in Silesia, striving for the return of Upper Silesia to Poland during the Silesian uprisings and the plebiscite. Unfortunately, this attitude was not tolerated by the Wroclaw bishop and cardinal Adolf Bertram. The nomination of rev. Kubina to become the first Bishop of Czestochowa was a cunning political approach. This approach put the final seal, after the partially won plebiscite, on merging Upper Silesia into Homeland, whose heart during the German rule was the Jasna Góra Monastery.
