On the 100th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Częstochowa Diocese (2)

Abstract

Bp Kubina was highly respected among the diocesan clergy, nuns as well as secular sisters. However, he was characterised by unprecedented restraint in interpersonal relations. At the threshold of the developing diocese, he was appreciated for his organisational skills as well as social service. However, a large group of people of the local Church did not understand his cautious approach to existing habits and liturgical forms. From the beginning of his stay in Częstochowa, he was viewed by the clergy from Cardinal Bertram’s side as a Polish chauvinist, whereas in the Częstochowa Diocese he was perceived as German. In fact, he was a native Upper Silesian with the overall heritage of both positive as well as pejorative features of the people among whom he grew up. In the following years, he adopted the character of his new diocese, but he did not resign from proud elevation of his Silesian origin and understanding the Church.
