Abstract

St. John Fisher, for years associated with the University of Cambridge and the Tudor dynasty, became a special defender of the unity of the Church of England with the Holy See and the indissolubility of the marriage of Henry VIII with Catherine of Aragon. When he was imprisoned for the second time, he sent to his sister, the Benedictine nun Elisabeth, the texts constituting his spiritual testament:
A Spiritual Consolation and The Ways to Perfect Religion. The first of them, edited in the spirit of medieval theology, is a warning against the possibility of God’s punishment.
The second contains the perspectives of Renaissance thought, and indicates ten ways to achieve mature religiosity, enabling you to reach heaven. Both works are valuable theological literature, also for contemporary theology.
