This article examines En guerre (2018) by François Bégaudeau through the lens of the concept of emancipation. It argues that the novel contains three complementary modalities of emancipation. First, from a Bourdieusian perspective, it promotes an emancipation of readers through social critique, which exposes the mechanisms of class domination. Second, in a more symbolic register, the novel stages an emancipation of the popular classes, whose vitality is foregrounded and valorized. Finally, an aesthetic form of emancipation operates through the use of free indirect discourse, which democratizes the diegesis by giving voice to dominated subjects and by unsettling the hierarchies structuring the social order.
