Émancipation et rébellion dans les romans noirs de Mongo Beti

Jean-Hugues Bita’a Menye

Rezumat

The following essay discusses emancipation and rebellion in Cameroonian noir, through an analysis of Mongo Beti’s last two works. A sub-genre of crime fiction launched in France during World War II by Léo Malet, noir espouses a political agenda and a strong desire for literary and cultural emancipation that constitute its trademark. Other literary figures such as Chester Himes will maintain this political orientation through the denunciation of racial discrimination. In his two last novels, we argue that Mongo Beti relies on noir to further his consistent denunciation of corruption and violence in postcolonial Cameroon. In addition, the novelist embraces a literary style that, through ridicule and realism, restores human dignity.
