Abstract

The aim of the study will be to examine two works from the early 21st century and to determine the layers of meaning and symbolism. Their author is the painter Roman Nyga. They are located in Bieruń. The first is a painting entitled The Holy Family placed in the parish church of St. Bartholomew the Apostle. The work symbolically conveys, among others, the beauty of love, community, faith. We can also encounter these issues in the square of the so-called St. Valentine's Square. In its center there is a column - the Monument of St. Valentine, Patron Saint of the City of Bieruń. The main access to the central point of the square is flanked by two low plinths, on both sides of which there are granite slabs with drawings and inscriptions: love - purity, let's do good, faith - prayer, grace - miracle. The research method adopted in this study combines the analysis of sacred art with a local historical background and a broader cultural perspective. The aim of the study is to isolate symbols and signs encoded in the works discussed and which co-determine their uniqueness in which the beauty of art conveys the beauty of deep faith and prayer.
