Abstract

The five basic human senses – sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste – constitute important elements of communication and engage the human person in distinct ways in relation to God during the liturgy. This article focuses in particular on the sense of hearing, which uniquely draws the person into a reverent and profound experience of the liturgical celebration. Beyond listening to the Word of God proclaimed during the liturgy, hearing is also an essential component of every form of prayer, chant, and even silence. If it is God who first takes the initiative by addressing humanity through His Word, then the most fitting and logical human response is attentive listening – a posture that ultimately leads to contemplation and conversion.
