Abstract

The sacrament of marriage, as celebrated in the Catholic Church, constitutes a unique sign of the union established between spouses in the likeness of Christ's love for the Church. It possesses a Eucharistic dimension and is therefore intrinsically linked to the Eucharistic liturgy. The celebration of the liturgy of the sacrament of marriage, especially when it takes place during the Holy Mass, requires the selection of a worthy and appropriate place.

An analysis of relevant Church documents and scholarly studies leads to the conclusion that the parish church of one of the spouses should be regarded as the most appropriate place for the celebration of the sacrament of marriage. It ought to be the first choice for those intending to enter into a sacramental union. Any deviation from this norm should be justified by serious reasons and must occur with the consent of the competent ecclesiastical authority. In particular, cases in which the sacrament of marriage is celebrated outside a sacred place—requiring the permission of the diocesan bishop—should remain exceptional. Only then can the liturgy of the sacrament of marriage, as a communal event of the Church, remain deeply rooted in the liturgical space and in the life of the local faith community.
