Abstract

This article is a synthesis and comparison of changes occurring in the rites of Holy Week that took place in the 20th century. It summarizes, in a short form, the reforms that were started by Pope Pius XII, and were ended with the last typical edition of liturgical books released after the Second Vatican Council. The Article focuses on analyzing liturgical texts from this time period. 

Comparing ceremonies contained in the liturgical text of this period showcases the process of their simplification which had the distinct purpose of helping the faithful obtain deeper and more active participation in the ceremonies. Emphasising the role of lay people in the liturgy as well as the gradual increase in the incorporation of vernacular languages. This contributed to the results intended by the reforms.
