Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present a problem of defining the borderland in relation to the state border and to compare the theoretic approaches in Polish social sciences. The author assumes that state border can create several different relations with borderland: it is possible the emergence of borderland in a process, in which the state border plays no role. The author presents seven arguments to explain this approach and then presents a typology of borderlands in relation to the state border.
