The Word no in Czech Colloquial Texts

Olga Můllerová

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to investigate how the Czech word „no” is used in contemporary informal communication. It is an attempt at a description of its monological and dialogical functions (the most universal of which is the connective one), lexical meaning, its position in the syntactic structure of an utterance, and phonetic features. The data come from transcripts of Czech private conversations and semi-formal dialogues.
