Sažetak

The article substantiates with the necessity ofdefinition ofspeech studies (the linguistics ofspeech) as a special and independent aspect (trend) oflinguistics, which adds the study of the language system. The subject of speech studies is the functioning of language in sociocultural context (not only a verbal one), the objective regularities ofits usage by speakers; a specific speech system and its units (statement, speech act, and speech genre).
