Reform and Current Legal and Liturgical Status of the Use of Pontifical Vestments and Insignia by Priests Without Episcopal Ordination

Abstract

The article presented deals with the issue of the use of pontificals by priests without episcopal dignity, who enjoy a special jurisdiction in the Church. The text is divided into three parts, which discuss the reasons for the renewal of ecclesiastical discipline with regard to the issue in question, the documents by virtue of which the existing practice of wearing pontificals has been modified, and the current legal and liturgical status. The aim of the publication is to answer the question: who can wear pontifical vestments and insignia today, and to what extent? This question is answered through an analytical synthesis of the sources (both conciliar and legal). This makes it possible to recognise both the change in practice that has taken place over the past decades and its current dimension.
